Why is my hair thinning

Thinning hair rarely has a single cause. Before you buy anything, it is worth understanding what is happening and telling apart what is a job for care and what is a job for a doctor.

The most common reasons

  • Seasonal and temporary shedding. After summer, after an illness, after childbirth or after a period of stress, more hair falls out. In most cases it settles down on its own within months.
  • Mechanical strain. Tight ponytails, buns, extensions and frequent brushing of wet hair break the hair and burden the scalp.
  • The state of the scalp. An overloaded, congested or irritated scalp is not a good environment for hair.
  • Nutrition and hormones. A lack of iron, thyroid changes or hormonal fluctuations. This belongs to a doctor, not to cosmetics.
  • Hereditary thinning. Gradual, at the roots above the forehead or on the crown. A dermatologist deals with it.

When to see a doctor

When the shedding lasts longer than three months, when you see bare patches, when fatigue, a change in weight or an irregular cycle come with it. A blood count and an examination by a dermatologist give an answer that no shampoo can give.

What care can do

Scalp care cannot restore hair, but it can give hair good conditions: a clean scalp without build up, gentle washing without pulling and lengths that do not break. The Aotea Roots ritual is made up of a pre-wash oil, a shampoo, a conditioner and a tonic for the scalp. Use it regularly, for at least two to three months, and judge it by how the scalp feels and looks.

What to change in an ordinary day

  • Brush from the ends, and wet hair only with a wide tooth comb.
  • Keep the ponytail loose, at night wear your hair down or use a silk tie.
  • Hairdryer on medium heat, straightener only occasionally.
  • Wash the scalp gently with the pads of your fingers, not with your nails.

Frequently asked questions

How much hair a day is normal?

A few dozen hairs a day fall out normally. If you suddenly see noticeably more and it lasts for weeks, it is time to deal with it.

Will the Aotea Roots ritual help me with hereditary thinning?

Hereditary thinning belongs to a dermatologist. You can combine scalp care with what your doctor recommends, it does not replace it.

How long does it take before I see a difference?

Hair grows slowly. Judge after two to three months, not after a week.
